As the United States suffer from the worst drug-related problems for the past years, South Dakota remains isn’t as bad as the rest of the states. This state doesn’t have the worst statistics, it still suffers from opioid addictions, treatment admissions, and overdose deaths. This Midwestern state also suffers from the rapid rise of drug abuse which corresponds to the rising need for treatment centers and facilities.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 65 drug overdose deaths in South Dakota in 2015.
The number represents a 7.7% increase from the rate in 2014. The last two decades worth of historical data shows that there’s a higher than the national average rate of students that use methamphetamine. Methamphetamine and heroin/opioid drugs are now on trend on the most severe drug and overdose problems in this state. Several reports from 2016 also indicate that the arrests attributed to methamphetamine rose. From 1,500, the number rose to 2,100.
While methamphetamine remains to be one of the key players in the current drug problems in South Dakota, law enforcers have also noticed an increase in the heroin trafficking and abuse. As trends show a steady increase in the arrests related to drug abuse, more people were also admitted into hospitals for opioid-related issues. In 2014, 128,300 people suffered the effects of opioid in hospital facilities. The state has also seen a 59% increase in hospital stays over the five-year period.
As many drug abusers begin their opioid addiction with prescription medication, state legislature plans to have bills that aim to improve medical provider reporting standards. Increasing the public awareness about the increase in the deadly prescription drug and heroin problem is also seen as a great way to lessen the drug-related issues.
The need for more treatment facilities in South Dakota
South Dakota has a comparatively low percentage of drug use and abuse. This reason is why many of the treatment centers here are not yet equipped to care for the patients. Opioids and heroin present threats on the state in inconceivable manners. Users come from all walks of life, making treatment facilities even more critical infrastructures in the state. Great treatment programs are needed.
If you have someone dear to you and suffers from drug dependency, digging for treatment centers that can help him/her achieve a lasting sober life can be challenging. Lots of treatment facilities in South Dakota don’t offer comprehensive and permanent relief from serious addiction. Because it takes too much effort to find an effective center in the state, many fall back into the traps of addiction. To break this hideous cycle, many residents opt to a search of out-of-state treatment facilities.
